moving windows crashes my xserver with ati drivers

good day
time for another ati drivers issue... it took me weeks to figure out what prevented me from getting 3d support on my system (i had a libc++ incompatibility i was able to track down only running glxinfo with an exoteric env variable set, go figure...)... now finally fglrxinfo reports im using the ati drivers, but:

1) all i get running fgl_glxgears is just some crap in the lower left corner of the rendering window (!??)
2) moving/resizing/scrolling windows cause my system to hang (?!!?), buy hey i can still move my mouse around (great fun that)

to be 100% honest, my xserver has always been suffering from a very weird behavious: when it gets a kill signal (the term signal works as expected though) everything locks up (mouse included this time!)

any idea? thanks in advance

thanks for your interest bobbens, I'm running version 2.6.13 of the linux kernel, xorg 6.8.3, distro im running is crux, id est, all stuff was compiled from plain vanilla sources... i really can't understand what's going on, this behaviour is odd to say the least, expecially for the "kill sig" part ^^

Dunno, think it might be related to your distro, i've had no problems running x-windows with debian (woody, sarge, etch and sid) or gentoo, at least none like you describe. Do you get the X server problems without the fglrx driver? I've used the latest driver (although i prefer the 8.12.10) of fglrx and have experienced nothing like that using both xfree86 4.3 and xorg 6.8. I'm pretty sure the problem is lib related or distro related because it's the first time i've heard of someone having problems like that, and also the first time i've heard of crux... BTW i'm not sure if your kernel is supported by the fglrx drivers, of course i'm sorta outta sync with the new ones, but the ones i use (and a few versions later i think also) are uncompatible with kernels 2.6.11 and newer, not sure if it affects your version, but you can also check that out.
