adsl setup over slackware already read all threads catering these questions

I have slackware 11.0 with 2.4.33.3 kernel.the problem is that i use dial up connection with a NIC and externel router .i use static ip that 9is 192.168.1.1 of my ruter/modem which acts as a gateway and i assign 192.168.1.2 to my NIC .after that i dois pppoe-setup and supply allthe details as required by it .it works fine then
what i do is pppoe-start and it gets connected but when i ping any site it is unable to connect and says UNKNOWN HOST GOOGLE>COM
but when i use ifconfig eth0 down and then use pppoe-start i am able to ping why so ?
ifconfig is for deactivating the ethernet card.please let me know

Can you ping your router?

Check /etc/resolv.conf Your DNS servers might not be setup properly.

You would get the DNS from your ISP and place in the '/etc/resolv.conf'.
