[SOLVED] Does LinuxQuestions.org have PM's as such? And how do I send 'em?

Afternoon, all.

Now, then; how d'you send PM's on this forum?

Very far from being a 'noob', but new to this particular forum. Probably a daft question, and I apologise if it's already been answered before, but I can't suss this one out at all. I also apologise if this is in the wrong place.

I've belonged to an awful lot of forums over the years (including several I can no longer remember!) I date back to the days of the old 'bulletin boards', and, invariably, every single one of those sites has had a different way of doing things.

I wouldn't have believed there were that many variations of forum software out there..!

if I've clicked on your Member Name, it then gives the option to add you to my contacts.
& then, if I've clicked on 'Private Messages' which up the Top, near the Log Out - link,
I'd then be able to send you a PM & read your reply, when you sent one.

but, unlike some forums, you can't send any PM direct from clicking on any Members Name.
this is most probably, because this forum, like a few other forums,
does not use the usual phpBB that is an open source forum software.

It should also be noted that "Senior Member" in this context means 150 posts, not 1000.

Personally I disable direct communications from other users for a couple of reasons:

1) Most of the time I'm responding from where I work so can only take time here and there to respond. Getting PMs would distract me. Emails I might or might not see in a timely fashion..

2) LQ is designed to help people. If questions and answers are done via email or PM then other users in future don't see the detail that (hopefully) led to a solution. I much prefer responding in threads. Also given that I'm not looking at it all day it is probable that another user will be able to respond to follow ups and help drive the issue to a resolution.

I've no intentions of fixing things via PM, that's not how I work. Being new here, I'm still feeling my way around.....and merely wished to ascertain how things are done.

Like I said, every forum, without fail, does things differently. At some point n the future, I may need it; I prefer to 'feel' my way around in the early days. And if I can't do that.....then I ask. Nicely..!

In my experience, as long as private messages are enabled for a specific recipient (and the sender too of course), you can click on the user's name and then select "Send a private message to username" to directly send a private message to that user. The recipient doesn't need to be in your contact list.

You can send me one to try it out if you want.

My apologies, Habitual. It couldn't have been Murga (www.murga-linux.com; the Puppy Linux Forum); I rather think Puppy's too 'down-market' for you, mate..!

I meant, of course, the Ubuntu Forums.
