we changed permissions on the etc directory and now we can not log in


we were changing permissions and it seems like the password file got changed. Now we can not login as a user or as root. Is there a way around this,?

New to linux.

New to linux.
Don't fiddle too much with the /etc directory. /etc/passwd file should be readable by all!!

Your only way out is .. insert boot cd and either

1) linux single

or

2) linux rescue
(This will mount it in a different mount. Do your changes and reboot.
