Scientific Linux Install Root?!?!?!

Yeah I'm sorry, I know it's not RH but I thought I would ask it here.

Why does this distro no allow you to create a normal user after the install. Once completed the first user I login is root. If I'm not mistaken other distros ask you to create normal user accounts. I don't remember that question being asked when installing Scientific Linux.

Hi,

What version of Scientific Linux are you using? And I don't think it's a problem posting in Red Hat forum since Scientific Linux is a clone of RHEL and almost all commands and configurations should be identical. I have on installed on a virtual machine and now that you mention it, I don't recall the installer asking that question neither. Would have to repeat the install to confirm. But you can always create a regular user with useradd.

Kind regards,

Eric

Hi,

Just ran the Scientific Linux 6.0 installer again, this time as a normal desktop instead of a basic server which I installed before. Whereas with the server install I don't remember getting asked to create a user, when rebooting after installing the desktop version the first thing that gets launched is a Create user option (mandatory as it seems). So it might depend on the form of installation you ran when installing Scientific Linux.

Kind regards,

Eric

Scientific Linux to be basis for Redhat ISIS install but

Scientific Linux 6.0 to be basis for Redhat ISIS install but I don't have RedHat and was told to use Scientific Linux version 6.0 which there were 6 "iso's" to choose from.

I came here earlier did a similar search as I just did now before starting new thread about Scientific linux 6.0 I used ONLY the Install DVD and had to use it twice because I didn't understand what my "local host login" user name should be as you've been discussing. I only have command line options and no GUI. The 2nd install over the previous I used root and the password as was done above. I do not know how to install the other options. Do you mean:

http://www.scientificlinux.org/

RATS I wish I had taken a screen capture because this site had SIX download iso's for this version.

I got them all but was told to use the Install one.

I got a cd Boot dated March 3, 2011 145MB CD
ALL these are dated march 3, 2011
Everything DVD D1 0f 2
Everyhting DVD D2 0f 2
Live CD march 3-7, 2011
Live DVD March 7, 2011
Live minicd March 7, 2011

so I go there now and it seems there's an entirelly NEW download.

ALL I want to do is to get ISIS to work. period. Only reason I am messing with this system.

I will try the new drive and reinstall again...and be back likely

Bob...

Back quicker than I thought... at the link above clivk the ftp download and ALL the iso's I mention are there plus some new ones.

I am going to try the everything DVD 1 and 2... maybe that will give me ...EVERYTHING I need except ISIS which I get from USGS.
