RHEL6 memory support

How much RAM is supported by RHEL 6 x86_64 ?

I installed 6GB RAM and was unable to install RHEL6 due to kernel panic.

Then I removed a 2GB stick and successfully installed RHEL6 with 4GB RAM.

But inside the OS it shows only 3.3 GB of RAM ?

Why ?

Normally I'd say "because you installed the 32-bit version," but even the 32-bit SMP RHEL6 kernel supports up to 16GB RAM. What kernel are you running, exactly (uname -a)?
