I have had the same issues that you two are having in regards to installing Red Hat on VPC 2004. The work around that I have found is to use VMware. It is free, will run on windows, and is overall faster than VPC2004. But this might not be a solution if you must use VPC 2004.

Here is the link if you are interested:

Hi,
I am new to this forum.
I want to install Red Hat Linux 9 on VMWare workstation.
Previously I have never used any type of Virtual Machine.
This is for the first time I am going to install Red Hat Linux 9 on VMWare workstation.
Can any one please give me the full steps for installation(from scratch).
And also let me know whether any type of configuration is required for VMWare before installation.
I am having Windows XP on my machine.

Thanks and Regards,
Deepak

Black screen-video problems with MS virtual Pc and Red Hat 9

I was using RH9 with MS virtual PC 2007 and I got a screen that was 1600 x 600 x 8 that was mostly black with some garbage , the link is to a page for MSVPC2004 but it still worked for me. During the installation you should set the color to 16 bit, it seems the default is 24 bit. I also change the video memory of the card during the install to 16meg, I don't know if that helped at all, but it didn't seem to hurt at all. I guess it could also be done if you boot RH9 to the command line and edit x-config .

* Robert Moir originally reported this OS as working
* Stephen Hill added:
Add:

alias snd-card-0 sb
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

to /etc/modules.conf to get sound working.
* Mike Drum noted that to install successfully, color must be set to 16-bit

I can install red hat 9.0 in Microsoft virtual PC 2007. After starting, click CD menu and choose capture ISO image. Select CD image to capture wizard will open. Then choose Red Hat ISO file and just open it. Red hat installation will start.

Cheer!

That's great....but RedHat 9 is ancient, virtual PC 2007 is three years old, and this thread was started SIX years ago. Don't think any of this is relevant.
