How to open doc and docx files

Anyone Can tell me how to open doc and docx files in redhat i.e RHEL 5. I have installed open office but it cant open doc and docx files its only opening rtf files it is showing boxes in doc and docx files

Which version of openoffice? The latest 3.1 version can open docx files, while doc files are read also by former versions.

I have installed the latest version itself thats 3.1 but its not opening

Are you trying to open by double-clicking? Try first starting up OpenOffice and then opening the file(s) from there.
