You don't need any odbc connection with Java and MySQL. You can use the JDBC drivers which can be found in MySQL website.

And another one is, are you talking about the installer program? If so, there are 2 free installer program I know.

1. "Ghost Installer" Free Edition (http://www.ginstall.com)
which uses the XML and it's very easy to use. But it's only for Windows platform.
2. "Install Anywhere" Free Edition (http://www.zerog.com/products_ia.html) which is the platform-independant installer.

Yeah! As long as MySQL database is up and running, Java will find it because you need to give the URL of the database to the JDBC driver.

I'm really confused. You said you wanna write Java with MySQL database. How can it be written without MySQL database installed?

(Ofcourse, It doesn't necessarily running the MySQL on the same machine)

Or are you looking for the embedded database which can be integrated into your Java applicaton? If so this one http://hsqldb.sourceforge.net/ would do the job for you. It is a small and light database written in Java which can be run either as a stand-alone or embedded into your application.
