compile Python in Linux?

I have used distutils in Windows to compile my Python programs into a binary that is easy to distribute and for users to run without understanding anything about Python. I am wondering if something similar can be done in Linux. My main concern is that I dont want my users to have to track down and install the libraries I used and to have any issues related to Python version differences.

Thanks in advance.

To be more specific I used py2exe with distutils. And that is what I would like for Linux.
