alter middle click paste

How may I programatically (C/C++) alter the middle click, so when I middle click into a textbox it would say "Hello world". A similar thing happens when I select text using the mouse then I could middle click to past the text I have selected in say another program.

Also where should I be looking to learn more about how to do such things under linux.

It depends on the library (pure Xlib, GTK, Qt etc). Which one you use?

X11 so I guess the XLib library. Will it have the same effect accross other programs using different libraries?

Well.. it depends on the fact how you define a textbox. It's comething different in Xlib, Qt and GTK. It'd be very hard for you to find out if mouse if over such field. I recommend you to start with Xlib and then think about other possibilities.
