How do I backup OS X (Just the system directories)

I plan to keep all my personal data on the same partition as OS X. I do NOT want to have a dedicated partition for OS X. I just want to know the important directories and avoid backing up transient data i.e. temp files. I don't really want to pay for a commercial solution.
