Can't install powernowd

I followed the instructions from a previous thread, but powernowd won't install correctly. I've copied the output from the shell below:

root@1[~]# apt-get install powernowd
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Package powernowd is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package powernowd has no installation candidate

I've attempted to unpack and install various packages from debian.org and sourceforge.net (some .deb and others .tar.gz) to get powernowd to run but have had no success. I've tried libcpufreq, cpufreqd and cpufrequtils but can't get powernowd to run. I'm running MEPIS 3.4-3 on a P4 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM. I partitioned the hard drive so that 10GB (ext3 linux native), 1GB (swap drive) and 4GB (FAT32 shared drive). Can someone tell how to install powernowd???

powernowd is available, I think from the Debian testing repositories

Check in Synaptic and make sure all your repositories are enabled (settings)

This package is available in the Ubuntu repos in Mepis 6.0A-

control cpu speed and voltage using 2.6 kernel interface
This simple client controls CPU speed and voltage using the sysfs interface
to the CPUFreq driver in v2.6 Linux kernels. It does not depend on APM or
ACPI, and it doesn't try to do anything other than control the CPU.

The name is somewhat misleading, as any CPUfreq capable processor will work,
not just those from AMD. However, it works better on CPUs that support more
than two speed steps, like those with AMD's PowerNow! or Intel's Pentium M
series.

This daemon is less complicated than cpufreqd or cpudyn, at the cost of
absolutely depending on a 2.6 kernel with the userspace governor and sysfs
support enabled.
