Kernel PowerNowD issues

Hello. I am trying to get powernowd to work. I am running a custom built kernel version 2.6.12. I have specifically set the CPU Frequency governor to userspace. My fstab file has this:

none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0

So I think sysfs is mounted on /sys. So, how do I load the cpufreq driver for my CPU? Dmesg and the system log report nothing about cpufreq. Grepping the syslog for powernow returns this:

kernel: powernow-k8: Found 2 AMD Athlon 64 / Opteron processors (version 1.40.4)
kernel: powernow-k8: MP systems not supported by PSB BIOS structure
kernel: powernow-k8: MP systems not supported by PSB BIOS structure

powernowd: PowerNow Daemon v0.96, (c) 2003-2005 John Clemens
powernowd: Found 2 cpus: -- 1 thread (or core) per physical cpu

Every time I recompile my kernel with whatever CPU settings online doc's tell me will do it, nothing works. Lsmod does not report anything related to cpu.

My System specs:
* Motherboard: EPOX EP-9NPA+Ultra NF4 ULTRA RT
* Video Card: Geforce 6800GT 256MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card -
* CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester 2000MHz FSB Socket 939 Dual Core
* RAM: CORSAIR XMS 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System

Although this topic is rather old, it might be of some interest for some of you how to solve the issue with Cool'n'quiet on some Athlon 64 X2 systems.

This message

powernow-k8: MP systems not supported by PSB BIOS structure

is usually caused by missing ACPI tables in the BIOS, which are the only way to use cool'n'quiet on SMP machines.
I had the same problem and found a solution. I have written a HOWTO where I describe what I have done to be able to use Cool'n'quiet.
You can find my HOWTO here:

Wow, thanks for the post. I will be trying that soon and I will report back if I can get this fix to work.

I may be off on a tangent here but on my laptop, running Mandriva 2006 with a custom build 2.6.13 kernel, there is a service called cpufreq. All this service seems to do is load the cpufreq modules on startup, but from looking at the /etc/init.d/cpufreq script there seems to be some magic to doing this. I'd suggest that you install the cpufreq package from your distro's package manager.
