Guess, a plugin is loading that can be executed as root, but not as a regular user. Quick test,
chmod u+s /usr/bin/xmms
then see if it locks up when a user starts it.
Have you tried opening it as a user in a console to see if there are any errors before it locks up?
I had the same problem. Mandrake did not load some of the defaults needed for sound.
Go to the Mandrake Software installer and load
alsa-utils
xmms-alsa
sndconfig
sndconfig is a command line tool to help you configure your sound. If this works, you will have sound. If not, go to the Mandrake Control Center -> Hardware, then click on the sound card and run tests, and use the troubleshooting tools.
After I added the above applications I am able to run XMMS, but only as root (I log in as a user, and then "su" to root, then type xmms). With 9.2 I temporarily had this same problem of only being able to run XMMS as root, but cannot remember the cure.
Adding the above software you should be able to have XMMS function again, at least as root.
This is weirder and weirder - if I run xmms from console as user it runs fine, then sometimes it will run from the K menu, sometimes it won't. Have installed all the suggested rpms - no difference!!!

Keep in mind that this is a slight security problem. The u+s means let the regular user become root for the execution of this program. I have never heard of any exploit in xmms. There is a perk, if you go to the options-->preferences then the options tab, you can enable select real time time priority when available, cause it now is. With that, if you do anything on your sytem that causes playback to skip (compile, whatever), well, it never does for me.
The same thing is happening to myself in Mandrake Community. It loads fine from Kde, but actually trying to play something causes it to lock in such a manner as it takes a swift kick from Xkill to kill it.
Xmms 1.2.9 run as root/console ----------> Works fine. Produces great sound.
Xmms 1.2.9 run as user/console ---------> Works fine. Produces great sound
Xmms 1.2.9 run as user/KDE -------------> Opens fine. Adds music fine. Locks readily.
Would installing Xmms 1.2.10 fix the problem? Does anyone know of a cure for this? I'd hate to have to run through a console just to listen to a tune.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Edit:Never mind.....I apparently didn't read all the way though the post (or misread). Performing chmod u+s solved the problem. Thanks

How about from File Manager as root?
root/KDE -----> Opens fine, produces great sound?
If so, then the chmod u+s will take care of it as a regular user.
This doesn't fix the problem, just a workaround.

I had the same problem: XMMS crashes. Thanks for the suggestion of running "chmod u+s /usr/bin/xmms" from the command line, now I have sound! (I don't care if there's a security issue, I don't have an internet connection on my MDK 10 computer anyway)
