xmms can't play MP3 in Mandrake 10.1 community

I don't know why the XMMS can play MP3 in Mandrake 10.1 Community when I log in as root but it can't play MP3 when I log in as other user. It only appeared for a while and then disappeared quickly.
Is there any one who can answer my question.

Thanks.

I have checked that it is OK. Any user can have the permission to play MP3.

does it play ogg files ?

also, in the configuration of xmms, check what output plugin it's using. If you are running kde (and are getting sound from kde) then you could use the arts plugin.

Otherwise, alsa should be selected.

If no output plugin is available, then check what available in the MCC
