X Restarts with NVIDIA GeForce FX 2500 and MDK 10.0

Yet another problem with NVIDIA and MDK 10.0, I'm afraid...

I've spent the last couple of days working on this and have made progress, but I can't figure out what to do now.

Video card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 2500
Kernel: 2.6.3-7mdk #1 (I should be running the one with support for up to 4GB of RAM because this box contains 1GB, but I couldn't get the NVIDIA drivers to work with that).
Monitor: Iiyama LS702U
Motherboard: KuDoz 7X/400A (Chipset: VIA Apollo KT400A)

Problem: Randomly (seemingly) X stops, the display either goes black or is filled with multicoloured, pixelated rectangles, and then the KDE log-in prompt comes up. (That said, last time the display went back and the system locked; I had to do a hard reboot).

Any suggestions? :-)

If it is not strictly necesary for you to use hardware acceleration for your graphics, try supstituting (in XF86Config-4)

Driver "nvidia"

With

Driver "nv"

With the "nvidia" you use the official NVIDIA drivers with hardware accel. and the what else. If you use "nv" you use the generic X drivers for nvidia chipsets. It works for me - I have never got the official drivers to work on a 2.6.* kernel...

Hope it helps...

Cheers,
kamstrup

NB: Another time... You don't have to post all logs/configs in full lenght before somebody asks... It took me 3 hours to scroll to the bottom to tell you this :-P

Hmm... The reason I tried the NVIDIA drivers in the first place was that X was regularly locking up under MDK 10.0. Plus, for the posters of other threads relating to X freezing under MDK 10.0, updating the drivers seemed to help... However, given that X is still unstable even with the NVIDIA drivers, I suppose I don't have anything to lose by reverting to the "nv" drivers and approaching the problem from a different angle. Indeed, I don't need advanced graphics for anything.

Apart from disabling "acpi" and "lacpi", running memtest86, and praying, all of which I've tried, are there any other suggestions for troubleshooting the freezes?

Heh, sorry about that. :-)

First off, the FX 5200 does indeed work with Drake 10 (Running 2.6.3-9 kernel). I had to compile the module. Just make sure you have the exact kernel source version for the kernel you're running. After I figured that out it worked like a dream.

This problem reminds me of when I had my old GeForce 440 MX in this machine. I tested EVERYTHING and replaced some components. It turned out that the fan on the 440 had started working intermittently. When it turned off, the machine would freeze due to the vid card overheating.

I realize that the FX 5200 doesn't have a fan, but is your system temperature maybe too high?

Just a thought,
Exo
