WHAT is the major malfunction with Firefox on Mandriva?

Count me as another (I've seen others in here having similar problems) failing to get Firefox 1.5 going on Mandriva 10.1. To think that you can actually blow a hardy program like Firefox, which runs on everything from the sorriest proprietary OS platforms to every single other Linux distro I've thrown it at (even Damn Small Linux and Red Hat 9.0) is flat-out unexcusable.

Anybody have clue one what's going on? Heeding the problems others have had with it on Mandriva, I got the tarball of 1.5, untarred it to /usr/local, installed the licstdc++ that it needs (in fact, I installed every lib*.so from the Mandriva discs), and tried running it again: on typing "/usr/local/firefox/firefox" I get "SCIM: im_module_init" and then it hangs there doing nothing, no window, no error, no exit, nothing. On trying "firefox-bin" I get "/usr/local/firefox/firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libmozjs.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" Guess where libmozjs.so is? Right there in the same directory! To add insult to injury, Mozilla - which worked PERFECTLY before - now freezes on startup after I've tried running Firefox! It actually has to be killed to close it. Limiting me to my THIRD choice of Konqueror just to get online!

What, do I have to go buy Windows NT just to run Firefox? Why can't urpmi find it? Why does the easy-URPMI site not give i686 as an option? Where's a source code tarball? Where can I find an older version of Firefox to install? Have the Mandriva developers gotten their paper bags to wear over their heads for having the only operating system on the planet that can't run Firefox?

Google search brought up this page from the Scim project which addresses your problem.

Keep in mind FF 1.5 is a release candidate and probably has bugs.

You can download the latest stable firefox (tar.gz) here

1.5 is the latest stable release. It is no longer a release candidate.

I wonder if this is just an issue with Mandriva 10.1? I just downloaded the binary, ran the setup programme and that was it. FF 1.5 even picked up my old bookmarks.

I'm using Mandriva 2006 btw.

This is simple - here is how to get it working:

Make sure that you have libstdc++5 installed - it will not work without it (won't even work with libstdc++6)

Extract the firefox 1.5 tgz (or tar.gz) to wherever you want to run it (i put it in my home directory at .firefox so that the directory is hidden)

Then run firefox by this command (in my personal path this it is: )

/home/kris/.firefox/firefox

Right, I was just covering the basics

To create a shortcut in KDE (Linux Torvalds' choice of Desktop Manager), just right-click the desktop, create new link to application, go to the part where you enter the command and browse to find the firefox file in the firefox directory and select it. Then just pick an icon and you are rolling.
