I have just change my computer: here is my new config:
AMD Athlon64 3000+ @ 2000MHz on Asus K8V-F with Via K8T800 Chipset
512 MB, 2 HDs 200 GB (WinXP)+ 80GB (MDK10 Official)
ATI RAdeon 9800 Pro AIW 128 MB
More infos at:
www;targa;co;uk*cms*targa_2_459.php?produkt_id=284
I just add the 80 GB Maxtor HD for MDK10, dual boot by lilo.
I have a big problem of freeze in several conditions:
- when pressing Ctrl + Alt + Fn in KDE to go in a console,
- when closing a session in KDE or Gnome, or at reboot, except if launch in a console by "reboot" or "halt",
- when launching "Enemy Territory", or UT2004
- in fact, when i try to use my graphic card in a certain way (i think so).
What happens:
System hang and screen becomes dark with "No Signal" on display, power is still on but everithing seams off! Only thing to do: Power Off, then Power on again.
As the problem seams becoming from my ATI Radeon, I have installed the fglrx ver 3.7.6 driver from ATI for XFree86 V4.3.0. Acceleration is fine now, but freezes remain.
There is a thread here, from C++Boar, related to nforce 2 chipset (thread id 163732)
Is the solution OK for my config?
Is the problem comming from my AMD64 Athlon working with a "std" 32 bits kernel? (2.6.3-7mdk)
Lots of questions, and still no answers, even on MandrakeClub or MandrakeExpert !
As i am not able to post url yet, i have replace . by ; and / by * in targa site!!!
i can´t help in the technical aspect - but i dont think it will be the 64bit kernel option. Backward compatability. Assembly History shows that Intel mainly do patch work on designing chips and AMD is in the same field as Intel.
So lets just try that other option.... video card. Ok, i think the easiest thing to do is to ask a friend if you may borrow his card (tell him about the problem etc etc) and put it in your pc. (make sure that harddrake starts in boot. and checks your system for new devices).
See if problem still exists. That should give you an indication.
BTW 64bit kernel is obviously designed for exclusive use ie instructions that are only availible on 64bit processors like MMX was on p2.
I have a similar problem with a graphic card ATI rage 128. I assume it('s the graphic system. I can log out by issuing a reboot command from a terminal prompt for example. I can use the ctrl alt Fn function to go to another shell, too. I have asked the same question on the newsgroup "alt.os.linux.mandrake", but did not get an answer... yet, I hope. I'll keep this forum informed.
Please keep posting your results. It can help a lot.
About the "failed" eth0 problem, there is is a complete post on the newsgroup alt.os.linux.mandrake.
Black ICE: my graphic card is an ATI, and i think this is the problem: it seems that Nvidia is very much beter (regarding linux) than ATI ! My previous Maxi Gamer Cougar (based on Nvidia TNT2 M64) works perfectly under MDK9.2, and now my ATI freezes my system!!!
Alain: I solve the FAILED eth0 during startup by deleting the eth0 connection in MCC, internet and network! My adsl modem, ethernet and not usb, is working (isn't it?)
When my system crashes, is it possible after reboot to see a log explaining what has happened during crash?
Thanks for the eth0 tip. But if the logout prbolem is due to the graphic card, I'll give up on 10.0. It's not worth changing the graphic card on my PC, and not yet time to get a new one. I can work with 9.2!
