Angry My Mandrake 'lags'

Hi!

Now I'm facing first real problem with my Mandrake. I just have to say I haven't diagnosed this problem much, because I don't know where to start.. I hope someone could give me a hint.

My Mandrake 10 (official) became a bit laggy some days ago. It can be noticed easily by switching desktops.. they used to change very rapidly and sometimes still do.. but about 50-60% times it just lags. It can take up to 1 second to change the desktop to another.

Another situation where this can be noticed easily is writing. Sometimes, when I write (several times when writing this message) I get double letters like when I try to type 'car' it shows up 'ccar' or 'cr'. This is VERY annoying .

The same goes for scrolling windows, menu appearing etc..

My hardware:

Intel "Rock Lake" D865PERL
Intel P4 2,8Ghz FSB800 Northwood
1GB RAM 400Mhz
Enermax 450W power
Hercules Radeon 9800Pro 128Mb
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy ES

Edit: Could it be something with ATI drivers..? I installed them few days ago. No problems in install process and 3D works also.

Edit2: Oh yeah, I'm using KDE3.2

Edit3: I'm using Viewsonic VP171B 17" LCD Display(1280x1024@75hz). According to drakconf, resolution is 1280x960, but in the displays menu it says 1280x1204.

Woow, you have a POWERFUL system, but maybe try to "see" what eats your CPU power?

try "ps axu" command
-or
try "top" command to see where your resources are gone.

Yep, that's why I want it to work properly

Ok, I have XMMS, Kontact, Opera, Drakconf, X-Chat and Konsole running and 'top' says "CPU: 50%". This must mean the current load of processor? This can't be normal? When I change desktop to another and back to the Konsole desktop the CPU is over 90%

Fenix*NBK* had the command a bit wrong. open a terminal, su to root, then type....... ps -aux (hit enter) it will give you a much more detailed view of what's running & chewing up those CPU cycles. look in the "cpu" & "mem" columns. if you know it isn't a need process, type kill (pid number) hit enter to kill the process. if you're unsure, post back with you're findings. you can copy/paste the whole screen. another place to look is Mandrake Control Center (MCC)->system->services. you may have a lot of unneccessary services running. look there & post back what services you have running so we can determine what's not needed.

Ok, this is copied from Drakconf process list. 'kma' is kind of server for my networkable dvd player so that's nothing special. I have been running for about 4 months and it works nicely. There should not be any other 'custom' stuff

please post what services are running from MCC->system-services. i have 15 services running on my machine & my cpu is currently at 12% usage while typing here in Opera, running xchat, konsole, MCC, with 4 desktops enabled.

the output of ps -aux looks within the norm. you might also wanna try lower the screen res a bit. it might be that it's too high, even though the monitor says it can take that setting. not sure that it's the cuase of the problem, but i'm just thinking process of elimination here.

You must now that LCD displays only have one optimal resolution and I have to use that. In this case it's 1280x1024. I any other res the picture isn't very good. And yesterday evening I tried with different resolutions but it didn't help.

When I select 1280x1024 from MCC, it prompts that I have to logout/login to settings take effect. When I do that and go back to MCC there is 1280x960. From the LCD displays own menu I can see that the res is really 1280x1024.

Well, enough of that.. I don't think that's the problem. I'll go and check the processes now.

Damn.. I can't do copy/paste

alsa
apmd
atd
crond
cups
devfsd
dm
harddrake
internet
jabber
keytable
kheader
lisa
netfs
network
nfs
nfslock
numlock
partmon
portmap
postfix
random
sound
syslog
udev
webmin
wine
xfs
xinetd

Then there's less than 10 processes that are "stopped" or there is no status visible. I checked with gkrellm and with switching desktops rapidly I can get the processor load up to 20%. With the KDE monitor thing it says over 90%. I have Opera, X-Chat, MCC and XMMS running now.

Edit: I'm DLing all the patches now.. let's see if that helps.

Edit2: Top screenshot. Looks like that after a few quick desktop changes. And lags.

THE FINAL EDIT: It was the damn KasBar app that caused the lag. I switched it off and no lag anymore. Ok guys thanks and remember, don't touch KasBar
