Mandrake 9.2/9.1 Install problems (RH9.0 also a problem but SuSE 9.0 works)

I'm having problems installing Mandrake on one of my machines, I've tried 9.1 and 9.2 and neither work.

The machine is as follows:

AMD AthlonXP 2000
Soltek SL-75FRV motherboard
512MB DDR
GeForce 4 MX440

There's other hardware in there of course, but I don't think they're likely to be causing the problem.

If I select a normal or expert install (ie. graphical install) I get a black screen. If I select a text install it freezes. Here's the last few lines of output I get with a text install:

CPU: AMD Duron(tm) Processor Stepping 00
Enabling fast FPU save and restore... done
Enabling unmasked SIMD FPU exception support... done
Checking 'hlt' instruction... OK
Checking for popad bug... OK
POSIX conformance testing by UNIFIX
enabled ExtINT on CPU#0
ESR value before enabling vector: 00000002

The disks are fine as I used them on my other machine:

AMD AthlonXP 2400
Elite systems motherboard
256MB SDRAM
GeForce 4 MX440

Any ideas?

I wonder if its a power management thing. Sometimes its a matter of disabling it at boot time (you'd be doing a text install, I guess). I'm not sure what else.

Well, I have MDK 10 downloading at the moment and I'll give that a go, if it doesn't work I'll try disabling the power management on the motherboard. Thanks for the suggestion

Actually, you should be able to disable apm or acpi at boot with an extra option when you boot from text mode. Something like
Code:
linux noacpi
The "advanced" selection should tell you the switches that are allowed. I've been lucky withthat so far (Vectordrake knocks on his wooden head)

Cheers Vectordrake, solved the problem

For anyone reading this thread though, the command is:

Code:
linux noapic
Now to configure everything to my liking...

Glad you got it! And, thanks for posting a "resolved" entry. You're an asset here. Apic is an SMP thing and I still don't understand why its enabled in kernels intended for single processors. Mine doesn't barf on it, but I got lucky with that, I guess. Gruvey
