Mandrake 9.1 updates How to install?

Hi guys I am using mandrake 9.1 and i have downloaded all the rpms from the ftp.
I have chosen only the latest kernel update (2.4.21-0.25mdk)
It is safe to make update from the rpms?
What do you propose?
First update all secondary files and then the kernel or the inverse?
How can I safelly update the kernel? (just run rpm?)
Thanks for your time...

just try install the kernel update using rpm or urpmi. If it needs anything else to be installed (which I doubt) it will tell you so.

It should be perfectly safe to install from the rpm though I haven't done it myself. I installed the kernel-source and then went through the compilation routine.

You have to make sure your lilo is all right after installing the new kernel - take a long look at lilo.conf and then run lilo.

What quatsch said, and it is safe - I've done it, even using kpackage in KDE. Just a click on the install button and there was the new kernel.

I'll disagree with bitpecker a bit. I prefer to use urpmi as it's cleaner, works better and almost flawless.

You can set up sources for updates in Configuration/Packages/Software Sources Manager and away you go.

Update everything but the kernel. Use install software for the kernel.

There's also a lovely TWIKI site maintained for questions such as these at http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/...akeReferences.

Good luck!
