Windows Blue screen after install and how to install Mandrake updates from a CD?

Hello I'm a newby determined to learn Linux so I can tell WINXP to shove it!!!
I've just installed Mandrake on a windows PC, I chose to resize the existing windows partition upon install and split the harddrive size about 37 gigs each

1. When I restarted and tried to boot to WINXP Home addition SVC PK1 I got a blue screen with the following error:

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, rrstart your computer, if this screen appears again follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to checkyour hard drive for corruption, and then restart your computer.
Technical Information:

***STOP 0x00000024 (0x001901FF, 0x81F69A00,)xC0000102,0x00000000)"

I did run chkdsk in WINXP Recovery Console and now Windows semms to be allright, at least I can boot into it.

I had problems when I installed a new modem and had to re-install WINXP. This is a fresh, clean install of Windows but I've not yet run Windows Update nor have I re-installed my anti-virus software. The last time I tried Linux I could not get my modem to work, so I wanted to try it out on Widows first and be able to go online while installing Linux.. I had it working on WINXP and also have it working on Mandrake. Now that I know I can get online with Mandrake I really don't care about having Windows anymore.

Any ideas on the blue screen, should I worry about it, or can I just "axe" windows somehow?

2.. I installed Mandrake 10.0 Official from CD's that I purchased online.

I also purchased a CD "Mandrake Linux Updates"; I cannot figure out how to install the updates from the CD, or other software I've downloaded such as Firefox.

I've searched and searched this site and Google for an answer, I like to help myself so that I can learn. Any advice would be appreciated.

Top of the morning to you!

If you would like to update Mandrake 10.0, the easiest way that I can think of is via the net. Take a look at sitethis. Works rather well........

Enjoy!
Eric.

Thank you Eric, looks like a great site. I have a dial-up modem and was trying to eliminate a lengthy update process. canary
