Lost Root User

I am using Mandrake 9.1, and recently had to reinstall it (I messed up completely fixing Windows). Now, when I go in it automatically logs me in as my normal username, but when I logout I don't see a root username listed in the log in list. Therefore I cannot access the root username which I need to access some directories. Is there anyway that you can recreate the root account from another users account?

No, you can't create a new root account, but no worries, you probably didn't really lose it, just activated the 'automatic login' during installation.

So...

Open a terminal and type 'gdmconfig'.
You will then be prompted for the root password.
Type it in as you defined it during installation.
Go to the menu item "Automatic login'
Disable automatic login by unchecking that option.
that's it.

and yes... don't forget to check out the 'expert' options and make sure that 'Allow root to login with GDM' is checked.

/j.

(edited cos I can't schpell... pft...)

Right, I put that command into the Konsole Super User Mode Terminal, it bought up the dialog. When I looked, automatic login on first bootup wasn't checked, and allow root to logon with GDM was checked. So I logged out to check, and there was only my Michael account listed on the log in screen.

Have you also checked KDE's Login Manager?

Launch 'kcontrol'
Go to 'System' and then 'Login Manager' and have a look at your settings there.

Ah, root was hidden. That should have fixed it. Thank you.
