Another Noobe question, I lost my user privileges when I log in as root. earlier I was able do every thing like a normal user but now after too many modifications ( experimental ) if I log in as root it takes me directly to Yast2 if I close it I go back to login screen again. I may have turned off my privileges when I played with user security settings, seeking help
This is why you do your normal work as a user and system maintenance as root. Don't go dinking around as root or you'll break something
Note: I don't know how to fix your problem as I don't have a Suse box, but wanted to make sure someone gave you the standard "don't run as root all the time" speech.
I wish if I knew what all changes I made. but cannot remember those changes. All this happen in my effort to setup an internet sharing . Any help to reinstate my previlages will be greatly appreciated.
Thanx for all the replies.
You said when you login it takes you to YaST2? Not to the YaST Contol Center? If it is YaST2, what module does it say you are in? If you can get into the User and Group Admin module, perhaps you could set up a second account that has root privelges and go from there (try to fix your original root). Again, this may depend on what module, if any, it is putting you into.
I remember a security setting that does not allow root access to the graphical system. Unfortunately I don't know where to switch that off. But as sigsegv already said: why would you like to work as root under X? You can gain root access whenever you like with su or kdesu. No need to run the X as root!
EDIT: I googled a little and found this:
Quote:
Make sure to set the following in /etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/kdmrc
in section [X-*-Core]:

When I log as root it takes me directly to Yast control center where I am allowed to make all kind to system changes. but for example if I need to run a programme I do not have the option for that. I will have to switch to a regular user to run any programme. The fun part is I was allowed to do this from root earlier, before all kind of changes I made which may have accidently turned off my previlages to run programmes as a root. I am still looking for the one I am missing.
