laptop monitor shuts off after a few minutes

mylaptop(Fujitsu NSeries Lifebook, 2.6 ghz, ati radeon mobility 9000 64mb(maybe32mb))

it's been working fine with mandriva 2006 for a month or so now. all the sudden the screen shuts off on me now(starting today). the computer doesn't shut down, just the screen(music still plays and stuff). i tried hooking it up to an external monitor and i can't get the screen to show up on the ex. monitor.

i let it sit for about an hour before trying again and got 20 minutes of uptime with the laptop monitor..so maybe it's a heat issue?

the fans are still running fine, and the laptop feels cool all around.

i reinstalled my / partition, which got me no where. still same symptoms.

time to call fujitsu up again?(it would be the 3rd time it's been shipped off this year(well 2005-2006)

i don't get the picture back
i have to restart, and it's not an x amount of minutes every time

the longer is sits powered off, the longer i'll have my screen up for

i tried booting into failsafe, and it stayed on for a few hours(as opposed to 10 minutes)

it never shut off

then i plugged in an external monitor and booted into:
linux nonfb

i don't know what nonfb is...but so far i've had it up for maybe an hour or so and it seems good on the external monitor

which leads to my next question...what is nonfb?
