Monitor shuts off when logging in.....

When I goto boot up and log into Linux, I get a black screen. after its done with GRUB. The monitor shuts off. It is on a Compaq laptop 1200US. should it have been good to make a boot disk?? I did not, but its not too hard to reinstall RH 9.

I had the same problem on my Presario 1200. The problem seemed to just stop occuring by itself when I rebooted the machine after first running it. To turn back on the monitor just press the power off button once for one second to put the laptop into sleep mode, and again to turn it back on. Then it should load the login screen. When you reboot your computer the problem will be solved.
