I dont know if this question has been asked yet or not but Im gonna ask it anyways. What is the big deal about KDE 3.4 and why is it so much better than KDE 3.3. I've been surfing around on serveral message boards and many ppl say that 3.4 is the best thing ever but I can never figure out why. Im new to linux so I dont want to go and install it from source cuz I'll most likely f*** something up and have to reinstall Mandriva 2005 LE all over again. Is there any reason why I should switch right now or should I just wait for Mandriva 2006 to come out and get it from there. Thanks for all your help in advance
I think the main reason everyone likes it a lot is because it faster/more responsive than 3.3... From my understanding is that it's not so much because of KDE 3.4 but a restructing of Qt that makes it run faster... I'm by no means a programmer, but that is my understanding of it.. I like it.. If you don't think you need 3.4, then just wait until Mandriva 11.0 comes out.. I'm sure it will include KDE 3.4
well in my limited linux experience, but have tried many distros such as mandrake 10.a and LE 2k5, suse 9.2, kubuntu 5.04, ubuntu 5.04 and fedora numerous cores. These distros have run from kde 3.2 to 3.4.
-- Kubuntu ran KDE 3.4. It is very XP like... me myself, dont care for it. first thing I do is turn off all of the animation stuff. Kubuntu isnt doing updates very well for simple issues. that kind of turned me off. I got to admit though, the debian version of URPMI which is Apt-Get (synaptic) is very nice.
-- Mandriva LE 2k5 ran KDE 3.3. I have always liked mandrake products but for some reason I had some sound issue while playing mp3's in amarok and using firefox. sounds strange I know, but it drove me crazy.
-- So just this morning, I returned backwards to Mandrake 10.1 and couldnt be happier. It is using KDE 3.2, running veru smooth. IMO it runs faster than 10.2 on my machine.
So it all depends what you are looking for. Looking for stability, I would wait a couple of more months for 3.4 to get integrated well.
Having not used 3.4, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY... as a new linux user i have mandrake and slackware systems.
I migrated from slack to mandrake for simplicity and ease of use for my server. My test and development machines are still slackware.
I am not impressed with KDE 3.3 vs. KDE3.2 my cdrom drives all stopped working when I upgraded and the GU interface seems to have degraded in quality. Headaches at the least. (I don't like the new autofs.)
However, the overall operation of my machine has gotten better. 3.3 is faster. I stopped using windows because of waiting and headaches. Upgrading always poses headaches period. In one week I have grown to prefer 3.3 over 3.2.
