Installing the 2.6.0 kernel

I have never had so much trouble compiling a damn kernel before. I spent all day yesterday trying to compile the 2.6.0 kernel from source with no luck. So I broke down and tried to install it using an RPM for Mandrake. It says I need module-init-tools > 9.15. Okay, no problem. I download the RPM for module-init-tools and get this:

file /sbin/depmod from install of module-init-tools-0.9.15-0.pre4.1 conflicts with file from package modutils-2.4.25-2mdk
file /sbin/insmod from install of module-init-tools-0.9.15-0.pre4.1 conflicts with file from package modutils-2.4.25-2mdk
file /sbin/lsmod from install of module-init-tools-0.9.15-0.pre4.1 conflicts with file from package modutils-2.4.25-2mdk
file /sbin/modinfo from install of module-init-tools-0.9.15-0.pre4.1 conflicts with file from package modutils-2.4.25-2mdk
file /sbin/modprobe from install of module-init-tools-0.9.15-0.pre4.1 conflicts with file from package modutils-2.4.25-2mdk
file /sbin/rmmod from install of module-init-tools-0.9.15-0.pre4.1 conflicts with file from package modutils-2.4.25-2mdk

So I thought I'd try removing modutils and it seems every kernel I have installed needs it to function.

Does anyone have any idea how I can install the new kernel in Mandrake?

Yes, I have followed all the instructions I can find but I just keep going in circles.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Ted.

Okay, I got past the afforementioned problem. I am now very close to getting this damn kernel installed. I found and installed all the dependencies needed by the 2.6.0 kernel. Now when I try to install the kernel it says "udev needed by kernel-2.6.0" and when I try to install udev I get "Kernel >= 2.6.0 needed by udev." So I can't install either one.

What the heck do I do now?

Thanks,
Ted.

There's a current and quite active thread that concerns for Mandrake, so I'd look there. It is for an rpm of 2.6 though... hopefully things will be similar.

The thread is here.

Yeah, I read that thread and several others. I don't know how I can install udev when it needs the 2.6 kernel and the 2.6 kernel needs udev. It sounds impossible to me. But if anyone can help I'd be glad to know how it went.

Here's what I'm going to try. I'm going to install the 2.6 test kernel and see if that will let me install udev. Then I'll try installing the 2.6 stable kernel.

Wish me luck.

You could also trying installing a udev rpm with the --force option. You may need to add the --nodeps switch to that also.

rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps udev-x.x.x.rpm

I don't know for sure though, using those options scares me.

I DID IT, I DID IT!!! Yeah. I installed the 005 version of udev instead of the 009 version and I now have a spanking new 2.6.0 kernel.

Thanks for all the resposes. Now I'm going to play.

I have already noticed a lot better resposiveness. Applications are loading really fast. I haven't spent long with the new kernel, but I like it so far.

Nope. Doesn't seem to be booting any faster but once booted it is running a lot faster.
