Kernel panic when installing a new Kernel

Hello,

Someone i know did this to install a new kernel :
"apt-get install kernel-headers-2.4.18.686"
"apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.18-686"

With no error message and when he did the shutdown -r now
He got this message
"request_module[block-majo-3]: Root fs not mounted"
"VFS Cannot open root device "302" or 03:02"
"Please append a correct "root=" boot option"
"Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:02"

I want to know how to correct this situation and what when wrong.
It's Debian 3.0r2 for PC

lilo.conf

This problem is a problem related to lilo.conf, what you should do is post your stanza for your current boot image however I'm betting that: http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl5_lilo.conf.htm will be of use.

You might try a
root=current;
or ommiting the root= param all together.

NeedRest,

Perhaps you upgraded from 2.4.18-bf2.4 to 2.4.18-686?

The main difference between the two is that -686 uses initrd (a kernel image which is loaded in RAM) during startup and -bf2.4 does not.

Check if you have a symbolic link initrd.img -> /boot/initrd.img in your root directory. This file should have been created by dpkg during install or your new kernel.

If so, check if you have this line in your lilo.conf in the stanza of your start-up configuration:

image=/vmlinux
initrd=initrd.img
etc...
