Kernel panic problem with all of my kernels after installing new kernel

Hi.

Here is a quick overview before I explain my problem:

I am running Debian Sid. I installed it from a sarge net install disc, and upgraded to sid. By default, I had a debian 2.6.7-1-686 kernel. I decided to install the 2.6.8-1-686 kernel from debian, and I got a terrible problem when I rebooted to the new kernel:

/sbin/init: 424: cannot open dev/console; No such file
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

The strange problem is, I get the same exact error when I boot to the 2.6.7 kernel (which I kept as a fallback)

I didn't know what to do, so I just reinstalled debian. Again, I have the 2.6.7-1-686 kernel that works fine, then I went ahead and compiled my own kernel (2.6.8.1) and I got the very same error.

Is this problem fixable? I don't want to have to reinstall debian again

TIA

Surely you learned how to build that kernel by now. If not, Kernel Rebuild Guide will teach you.

Check to see if your initial ramdisks (initrds) are working properly. If not, create one for your version.
