Installing: No DISK drive found

I have copied mandrake disk 1 onto the hard drive (c in a folder called Mandrake

I have updated the Menu.1st file with seemingly correct information from qa [dot] mandrakesoft [dot] com [slash] hd_grub [dot] cgi. (Sorry, I haven't posted enough to leave a real url.)

I get an error

No DISK drive found

Typing OK (the only option) I'm told

Please insert additional drivers floppy

I have no idea what I'm being asked for. To my knowledge I'm running a basic IDE hard drive.

This is a refurbished Thinkpad 760xd circa 1997.

The CD-rom has to be swapped in at the expense of the floppy and the cd-rom is not bootable.

Do I need additional drivers for Mandrake to recognize the hard disk?

Just as an aside, Vector Linux was able to install from floppies with the installation on the c: drive on this machine. I took it out because I've used Mandrake before on another machine and like it better.

"Please insert additional drivers floppy"

The installer needs a driver that is not on the first boot floppy.

"Do I need additional drivers for Mandrake to recognize the hard disk?"

Yes. Somewhere on the Mandrake install CD is an image of a floppy with the additional drivers. Make a floppy with the Mandrake additional drivers and insert the floppy in your floppy drive when it is asked for.

Thanks. But I have a feeling that's not the case. There's no file in the images folder that seems applicable.

I had the same problem with my laptop.
My solution was to use an alternate kernel by changing all the "alt0"s from the menu.lst to alt1
