Installation

I have an IBM Thinkpad 760EL, with 56mb ram and a 3gb hard drive. Either the floppy drive or the cdrom drive can be installed, but not both at the same time. The bios won't allow it to boot to a cdrom. Smart Boot Manager 3.7.1 will allow it to boot from the cdrom. When I try to install Mandrakelinux 10.1. The installation program say's "No CDROM delice found. OK". Upon pressing OK, the next screen says "Please insert the Additional Drivers floppy. OK". The next screen says "Floppy is not a ext2 floppy in the first floppy drive. Retry? OK, NO, BACK." How do I get the installation program if recognize the cdrom? The boot part of the cdrom sees it, or the installation program won't display anything.

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks for the reply. I've got Smart Boot Manager, which allows it to boot to a cd. Mandrake 10.1 installation cd will boot, and the installation will start, but it won't recognize the cdrom as being present, to copy the files.

http://personal.riverusers.com/~thegrendel/laptop.html mentions using ezstart. The file, ezstart isn't located on the Mandrake 10.1 installation cd #1, and I haven't found it on the web.

The Slackware CD will boot and do a complete install, but it doesn't automatically boot to a gui. Being a linux newbie, I'd prefer a gui, which is automatic.

With Slackware, all you need to do is to edit /etc/inittab to give you a gui automatically. Start from here: http://www.bitbenderforums.com/vb22/...32&postcount=5 and then either type in "startx" without the quotes or edit the first line of /etc/inittab to change the number from 3 to 4 (I believe, not at a Slack box to check) which will make it boot into a GUI.

Shilo agrees with me! (a good site to help with tweaking and setting up)

Mandriva allows formatting and copying the boot loader to floppy.

Check the readme on the cd from another operating system(cough! "like windows" cough!)

The html (install?) file might help too.
