help with adsl


i am using mandrake 10
i have 2 NIC's
eth0 for internal network
eth1 goes to adsl router

the router is set up properly i have been using it with windows machines so far

the NIC has a fixed ip of 192.168.1.150 (this need to be like this i have 2 adsl accounts and my account is set up to go to this ip)

i have just installed the ppp and pppoe i think it was the rp-ppoe packages where do i go from here to set it up.

do i need to use the controll center to ad a adsl connection?

what and where are the .conf files i need to change.
and what do i need to do in them

use mandrake control center->network & internet->new connection. follow the wizard, fill in the blanks (isp info, etc.). for adsl, choose the adsl & ppp+ options for connection types. when finished, restart network. you can set internet to start at boot in the wizard, or if not, in a terminal as root type adsl start to start a connection.

thanks a lot that worked mostly
the adsl connection is up but i still cannot connect to the internet thru mozilla or konqueror

why is this?

i have reconfigured adsl using adsl-setup and changing the firewall to none because i am running linux as a server (and it said that if there are server apps running it will stop email web etc etc)

this didn't help anyway

what now?

i'm not good with servers, but i'd think you have to set something up in your router to allow access to/from your machine. maybe somebody with router experience can pick it up here.

you could also try issuing the floowing command from terminal as route, to make sure your network is up.......... ifup eth0 (or eth1, 2, etc. whatever your card is detected as).

also, are you sure the firewall is shut down, before you screw around with the router. to make sure, in a terminal as root type service shorewall stop (hit enter). that will stop the firewall (shorewall) if it is running.

i logged on as root and tried to shut down shorewall, it sais "cant find shorewall service"

also the router has been set up properly that i am sure of.

i think it may be a permission thing but as i am new to this have no idea why or where to do anything about that

Type 'ifconfig -a' in the terminal window as superuser and copy paste the results here. Also you might want to look at files ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-eth1 in the '/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts' -directory.

ok i have descoverd that when i use "adsl-status" it sais the connection is up but when i go to "control center->system->services it sais that adsl is down and when i try start it just sais connection timeout
i then could not start the service again using "adsl-start"
when i checked the pppoe.conf file the eth1 device had been removed then when i add it back in and used "adsl-start it connected but again cannot browse the net

does this maybe meen that somewhere the browser does not know which NIC to use?

if so what do i have to set? if not what else could be the prob?

Ok, my previous post didn't seem to be of any help. I'm not familiar with ADSL connections, i have cable. Another thing that could possibly give you a clue where things go wrong might be to type 'netstat -r'. That should tell you which interface is connected to internet (genmask is 0.0.0.0).

You could also try to check out the wiki pages at [http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Networking].

Sorry to bring up an old thread

Hi there evry1, sorry that i am bringing up an old thread but i have the exact same problem as above. I am also in south africa cape town.

What i can add to this is the fact that in my ppp0 connection - i can ping my address but not the p-t-p (host) address and so i think that might be the problem. I have tried changing the router's address to the host address in my ppp0 setup but i wan unsuccessful. I have looked through my messages log and get errors indicatating time outs waiting for PAD0 packets. Also i can't seem to be able to change the addresses in the ppp0 link up (as that is the only place that i can think of that is not working). The mandrake 10 machine reports that the eth0 is up and running.

I have configured iptables on it and i am currently busy trying to set up a routing system (Bandwidth control). But what irritates me to no end is when i take away eth0 in mcc and reset it up, making it a LAN link then i reboot the system and hey it works.

But unfortunatly that will now be the best solution for me, because i loose the ability to change ADSL accounts and that is why i would like to get rp-pppoe working correctly - more the ppp0 link ip address change . I have spent the last 4 days looking up and reading tut's howto's and post's ( ) dealing with pppoe but nothing has been able to solve my problem. The one said that if i could NOT ping the host address then there is no link. (BTW i enabled pinging until the iptable rules are loaded then all the ping packets get dropped).

Otherwise when i use pppstats i get a printout indicating that data is being sent out but i dont get a reply from the other side.

Basically i would set up the pc as a router with a firewall - the client's gw address to pointing to the mandrake box, and the mandrake box will deal with load balancing as there are 2 adsl modems and lines that i would like to put in it. (that i'll deal with later, when i get an internet connection).

The routers are standard assighned telkom POTS routers (manconi or something like that) eth net type. And well if there is anything that i forgot to say or need more info, just post about it and i'll reply.

Question 1: Can you change the ppp0 ip addresses
(if not the problem)
Question 2: What could be my problem? (Can some1 tell me how to start ppp in debug mode?)
