cant start GUI

I just installed Mandrake 10.1 Download Version onto my computer, and I installed KDE and GNOME but when I start the computer it goes to a command promt. So I log in, and startx, but then the screen just has random colors and lines on it, and sometimes there is a word that you can see through it, like "starting".
What do I do to make it start?

That isn't a question.

read ESR's `Smart Questions' (GIYF).
