I have installed Debian and run it, but it started up at the command line. That must be the default, since I don't recall the installer asking whether I wanted command line or GUI; in any case, I do not have the experience, time or patience to run things from the CL. How can I make it start in a GUI?

When you get CLI type startx to start it. Under Debian your startup X startup script is located under /etc/init.d/ directory, eg. xdm, gdm etc. Then you can run the command

you r not exactly right but you r not to be blamed too.
The installer did has a portion where you can enter the packages manually, but its not very user-friendly, so its not your fault that u missed tat.
haf u installed X-windows system?
apt-get install x-window-system kde kdm
If you install any desktop manager, it will automatically start X and then start the desktop manager at boot. Any of the following will do:
Code:
apt-get install kdm
or
Code:
apt-get install gdm
or
Code:
apt-get install xdm
Also, the Sarge installer gives you the option to install desktop environment. If that is selected, it will install gdm along with the gnome and kde desktop environments. You can re-run that part of the installer by running the command "tasksel" as root. Select "desktop environment" and everything needed will be installed.

cd /etc/init.d
update-rc.d xdm defaults
Sorry to bother you, nixcraft. What would be the case with blackbox, then?
