Can't get graphic interface with Geforce FX 5200 [noob alert]

Hello there,
i was here a few months back with the same problem with mandrake 9.2.. and waited till 10.0 official to come out so i could try my luck again, but apparently luck hates me.

i've searched for other threads and some seem to be useful though i get stuck after the 4th line or so >.> (esp with stuff about editing files)

anyway, here are the steps i took..

put in mandrake 10 cd, reboot
partitioned hdd.. installed mandrake fine
when it reached the last part where i had to select graphic settings, i chose nvidia Geforce FX and 800x600 flat panel
when i clicked Test, the screen turned black :/
then i tried the "nv" driver and tested again.. screen went black again

after trying a bajillion other settings, i gave up and just selected X not to start automatically

here, i would like to repeat that im a total linux noob with no experience at all.. i would be eternally grateful to anyone who could point me to any useful tutorial sites or provide me step by step info on how to solve my problem

Thanks
d0h.

go here http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-5336.html and download the official driver and install it outside of x (if you can even get into x at all) then rather than "edit your xf86config file" as it says run the command "xf86config", "xf86cfg", "startx" and let us know.

dOh..........

here's a link to another thread where i (& another member) explain how to install the drivers. follow the instructions there & also read the documentation that Nvidia supplies. it looks like alot but it's not that difficult. just remember a couple of important things............

install nvidia drivers

you must have the kernel source installed!
you must install the drivers outside of the X environment!
you must edit xf86config-4 for them to work properly!
you must do all of the above as root!

ok,

first of all, be sure you are using mandrake OFFICIAL 10, the "community" one doesn't have matching kernel.

when you are first installing MDK, instead of using "nv" driver, use "vesa" driver. it is the only on that simulate nvidia driver.

Be sure you have the source of your kernel in your machine.
> ls /usr/src/
>linux@ _linux-2.6.3-7mdk/ _RPM/

if not, then
>urpmi kernel-source

Then, go to www.nvidia.com and download the driver for linux.

then, you have to close your X session
>init 3 (root)

then log againas a root and
>sh /home/your dir where driver is/NVIDIAbalabla.run

the driver will build itself on your kernel.
then,
go the
>vi /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

replace Section "Device" with
Section "Device"
Identifier "GeForce"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
screen 0
Option "NoLogo" "true"
Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"
Option "TwinView" "off"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP,CRT"
Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-80"
Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "50-160"
Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024, 1280x854 ; 800x600,800x600"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "LeftOf"
# Option "UseEdidFreqs" "true"
EndSection

and Section "Screen"
use : Device "GeForce"

then it should work :
reboot or startx
