I've used an nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card in my PC for a while now and have been very impressed with nVidia's driver package for Linux (I'm currently using Mandrake 9.1 and Win98 for games).
What I'd be grateful for is if people could let me know of their experiences with ATI drivers and graphics cards on Mandrake 9.1 or 9.2 as I'm thinking of getting a new graphics card for the next batch of new PC games.
I've read a bit in these forums and others how ATI's Linux drivers and support "sucked" compared with nVidia, even some messages suggesting that ATI drivers only work properly with RedHat etc.
I use an ATI Radeon 9000 that works great under Drake 9.1 -- installed flawlessly, didn't have to touch anything. I doubt its driver is as efficient as the Windows driver, but I can't tell any difference (I'm also not heavily into gaming...).
I am also trying to get a Radeon 9000 working under Mandrake 9.1. I got the drivers from ATI's website but when after installing them something stuffed up and wouldn't display anything after X took over on boot.
Could this possibly be an issue with the settings I put in when I installed the drivers ? its almost as if the refresh rate I entered is out of range of my monitor... (its getting on now).
Are official drivers better to use or is it worth trying to hunt down some third party ones ?
