Jeremy, I don't know what the LQ technology is behind your search server, but if it's a hardware issue, I would be willing to donate $20 toward buying a new, faster machine for the duty. If you could get a hundred users to commit to $20 or so, you could probably get a whiz bang new box for the search function. (But, I guess you'd need to setup some sort of shopping cart thing for that.)
Maybe it's not a hardware issue?? I searched and, after a while, I saw a few other threads about the slow searches.
Also, I just did a search on 'xine' and limited it to just the small ubuntu forum and it took a long time. That's what prompted me to look into this.
Regards...
edit: dang it... Can you fix the title : sow = slow
well the results of the searches are linked to what you search for. you will see a direct link between the search terms and the speed. searching for something really pretty useless, like "samba" just kills the box and won't return any specifically useful results... AFAIK a new search box is on route though.

Chris is correct - we are working on getting additional hardware now. In the meantime, one thing that would *really* help is for people to not hit the search button multiple times. Thanks for the patience. We know the search is integral to the site and we really are doing our best to make sure it's as fast and usable as possible.
Jeremy:
Just out of interest, what hardware runs LQ? I too have found the search to be slow on occasion, which I thought was a bit weird, as the forum pages are served pretty snappy. I always assumed the same machines handled both functions...

We actually have a dedicated search server, it just has trouble keeping up due to the shear number of posts here. As I mentioned, we are working on the situation now and will have the situation resolved as fast as possible.
