New to site, can't view poll results!?

Greetings to everyone!

This looked to be the most appropriate forum for intro's as I didn't see anything called "member intro's."

Anyway, I'm kinda new to Linux and am running Vector SOHO. I'm liking it so far although I am having some problems, mostly with apps, which I'll get to later in other posts if I can't resolve them. And that brings me to why I am here in the first place- I noticed the users choice poll and thought that would be a good place to find out what experienced users thought about certain apps and whatnot. So I went through the registration process and can now login but when I try to view the results of a poll it tells me I do not have that access privilege.

This is really puzzling to me because what good is a poll if you can't view the results?

What do you think... maybe I need to be a member for a certain length of time before I can view poll results?

Regards, M.C.

I think the basic reason is just that voting is still open, and so the results are not final. Once the polls close, LQ will announce the winners.

FYI, LQ does have a Member Intro forum

Welcome to LQ!

OK, it's a sub forum. Please excuse me.

Thank you for the insight into the poll. I thought they just kept track of the voting as it progressed but what you said makes sense if the engine doesn't have that capability

I don't think it's a technical limitation, but on the contrary a deliberate decision.
Hiding the poll results before it expires let people express their opinion without being biased by other people.

For normal polls, you can see the results as the poll progresses. For the Members Choice Awards, you can't see the results until the polls are closed.

It doesn't make sense to have a link on the page to view the results if viewing the results is impossible. Maybe that's a function of the forum software that the link is posted. If so, maybe there should be a note on the poll page that we won't be able to see the results until the poll has finished.

This is a result of the poll being part of the Members Choice Awards. All other poll results are viewable as the poll is going on.

And that is after you've cast a vote in the poll as well.

But the reason I wanted to view the poll results is because I am new to Linux and not familiar with the proggies. If I had to vote to view the results I would have to just make something up. If you truly wanted an accurate poll You shouldn't be forced to vote.

Thanks for all the replies.

In *any* poll except the Members Choice Awards you can simply click the "View Poll Results" link.

I disagree. Knowing the trend may bias your vote.

you are not forced to vote- even after voting in the Members Choice Awards (which are NOT regular polls) you cannot see the results. You don't have to vote...

Just to clarify, you will be able to see the results after the polls close.

If you are just information gathering then take a look at the last members choice awards:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...splay.php?f=69

There's just over a week to go on this year's polls so take your chance to vote while you can.
