how to view a very very long list of results

Dear all,

Sometimes when I do command "ls" for a directory that contains many files, the terminal cannot show me everything in one page, I am not sure how to explain this but see below:

when I typed

# ls

it came out with : ( apparently those files started with a-f weren't shown, how to I view those before gnome-network-preferences?_

My explanation is quite crap, I don't know how to explain it....its just when the result is too many, the terminal cannot show everything in one screen, but how do I move up to see the results that are not on the screen.....

Hope someone can udnerstand my crappy explanation...

another trick is to route the output into a file then view the file
ina editor. I.e.,

ls > lsoutput.txt
vi lsoutput.txt
