LQ Cookies don't seem to take

I am using Mozilla 1.6 under Fedora 2.
Have enabled cookies for LQ and I see LQ listed as a place to allow cookies from.
And yet - I still have to log in with username and ID and I find myself timed out after a short while.

Cookies showing up are:
bblastvisit (expires 29/04/06 - note, today = 30/04/06)
sessionhash (expires: end of session)

how come a cookie aquired today expires yeaterday?
