Then this idea dawned on me. Maybe it's already been discussed and declined... *shrug*
If a 4.5 yr old thread, with 2000+ replies spanning 138 pages, is a continuation of a 9 year old thread, with 4600+ replies spanning 311 pages, isn't it about time DE screenshots got their own (sub-)category? We're all proud of what we've accomplished in tweaking our "mad cool" desktop environments. It's like import tuners (ie: "Fast & Furious") or the low-rider culture. Threads could discuss newly discovered hacks, modules, plug-ins, etc, centered around one's screenshot. NOT subject: screenshot. Better subject: Awesome custom Conky config.
For that matter, there's "Linux - Distributions" with distro sub-forums, but no "Linux - Desktop Environments" with DE sub-forums (KDE, Gnome, etc)? I'm guessing people then get "Linux - Desktop" confused with DEs, when it's actually the residential counterpart to commercial "Linux - Server" (what Fedora is to RHEL)? Sure, I (and others) could join DE forums, like forum.xfce.org, but I frequently see DE discussions here on LQ, and I don't really feel like joining ANOTHER Linux forum... Especially when I'm already happy here.
Mods go: "Yaaaay <sarcasm> ...MORE forums to supervise."
Just my . Cheers...

We have discussed this sort of thing thing in the past. The issue with extra forums isn't one of extra work for the mod team, it's added complexity for the members - particularly new members. If we had, say, a Gnome sub-forum in Desktop, the issue with a problem would be is it Gnome specific, Software specific, Hardware specific or just a General problem. Tags were one solution to overcome this, ie, put the thread in Desktop and tag it as Gnome.
Having a specific area for screenshots isn't necessarily a bad thing, it would probably be better in the Wiki or in the iso are, imo. But it's worth bearing in mind that we would be duplicating similar spaces in the distro websites and on news websites.

I was actually hoping to alleviate confusion, as an "LQ newbie" myself, by adding structure so it's not such a mish-mash. And for members, I assumed it was possible to subscribe to sub-forums (ie: so Xfce pros could monitor Xfce specifically). Looking now, though, thread subscription seems to be the only option. Oh well...

Guess I still haven't gotten used to this whole new-fangled tag (cloud) concept yet. LOL! I also thought that DEs are (distro/hardware) independent software, so that a problem with Xfce is a problem w/ Xfce. Then again, I'm new to Linux, so...

Yeah, you lost me thereafter with LQ's layout... My original idea was Non-*NIX Forums > General > Screenshots, taking the place of the two mega-threads, to which they could be closed and moved. What I often notice in mega-threads are mini-convos & cross-talk that would be more unified within separate threads. *shrug*

Given the popularity of the screenshot threads, it's possible a sub-forum would make sense. Is there anyone who would be against a Linux - Desktop - Screenshots forum?
I'm for it, mostly because there are already many threads spread about the different forums, some redundant and with the same people posting in each one. Maybe a subforum will help organize it.
+1 from me. I like seeing the screenshots, but don't care enough to worry about them too much Having a separate space where members can post up pics and discuss how they created their desktop (maybe with example config files as appropriate) could be a good thing.
+1 *hopes no one notices that he's the OP and non-staff* LOL!

Thanks to both of you for understanding exactly what I was getting at & why...

Not fussed either way ... some screenshots (like e.g., the one above
my post, in http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...2/#post4370138 ) aren't necessarily
workplace safe, so moderating a forum like that would be a no-no

LOL! Sounds like you need either a new job w/ a more lax atmosphere, or your very own private office (wouldn't that be nice, eh?).
However, that brings up a very good point. Putting "NSFW" in the subject of such a screenshot's thread would be considerate, and make said sub-forum less risky to mod, no? Might be worth mentioning in the "Please read before posting" sticky? *shrug*
Out of curiosity, not impatience, at what point does

become official (and this thread is locked, else it becomes its own misplaced "screenshots" thread), if so? I don't know how these processes work. *observes* Thanks, everyone, for your support though.

I was thinking about that, maybe there should be a separate thread for that or something. Not that the above screenshot is actually NSFW, unless you work in a very strict place.
