I was trying to listen to radio stations on yahoo music, and it gave me a message saying "Firefox is blocked" (*Windows* firefox by the way). So just curious - have you (lq people) made sure IE can't get to this one at least?
of course not, what a daft suggestion... I use IE at work to get here. There's no point being deliberately awkward against Microsoft is there? What could it possibly achieve other than alienation... something you seem pretty keen on.

Why not direct your energy to trying to get Yahoo to fix their system?
I'm using IE from time to time to access this site, as do most people I know that visit here; reasons are many, for me it's sometimes simply that there is no other browser available to use on the Windows machine I'm on. No, I can't be the administrator of every internet cafe out there, nor am I willing to do any "one-time installs" of other browsers just for accessing one site, if there's a browser readily available.
That was as good an idea as blocking all Linux users from MSN Messenger and Hotmail just because Google search can find a page that has a yellow background which somebody dislikes.
We won't. Jeremy has always wanted LQ to reach the widest possible audience and blocking the most widely used browser would defeat that object.
This sort of suggestion, if implemented, would cut out all those people browsing from work (see posts above) and would also stop those people checking out Linux sites from their Windows/IE box from accessing here. See Jeremy's blog for access stats per browser: http://jeremy.linuxquestions.org/200...rowser-update/ - just because LQ is mostly accessed from Firefox doesn't all those others should be cut out.
no, it won't work. it's just ludicrous. If this site bans IE then 15% of traffic will probably disappear. If IE is banned, I personally would only be able to access LQ outside of office hours. There would be absolutely no revolution, and any "campaign" would be quite rightly derided. I'm sure it looks like a great "stick it to the man" idea as a 14 year old but back in the real world it's plain stupid with literally zero merit. Only possible outcome is "Linux users = elitist losers" in the minds of the majority. And they would be correct.

It's not a good idea to ban IE from this site, and it's not a good idea to ban any browser from any site. Some people use IE because they don't have a choice (net-cafe, work-PC, etc). Anyway: even these bans can be bypassed very easily. You can set your browser to identify itself as another browser and the site won't notice a thing. I just tried the msn web messenger site, and told opera to mask itself as IE, and the site didn't say the "your browser is not supported by this version of messenger" thing. I think it can be done with any site. I also tried yahoo radio, and it worked. I masked opera as IE, and yahoo didn't tell me any more that my browser is not supported, but it told me that I don't have a plugin it needs. Yahoo's stupid browser ban was bypassed. Haha.
for people using ie at work - why cant you just get your office to *install* firefox? since they've gone to the trouble of making a windows version....? (which i use?)
it just occurred to me that i read that a large part of yahoo runs on linux. i dont personally go there so i dont know *what*, but - *this* site is banning firefox! and of course they're doing it specifcially because they know what is stands for (sort of). god, these guys arent even scum!
can we just establish your age please? i'm guessing about 12 to 15 right? no actual working experience whatsoever? If you go to your IT department and demand different software for ethical grounds you will often, quite rightly within the realms of a commercial business, be laughed out of the room. you might even find your ID badge photo being used in various ways in the future.
And ok, i'll keep biting for no particuarly good reason.... you run Firefox on *MICROSOFT* windows right? I assume you'll demand you only run linux desktops when you get a real job right?

Easier said than done. Most companies go through approval processes for any software installed on any machine. Some use IE, some use Firefox, some even might use Opera. Some might not even allow outbound internet access.
As for Yahoo, it's not them banning Firefox, it's the particular application or portion of their site the developers coded to only work with IE most likely. I can get to Yahoo in firefox with no problems. Now streaming content or videos might be another issue, but I don't use Yahoo either so who cares! If it doesn't work with the browser of your choice, then don't use the site, it's that easy.

Yes, I can't get more than 800x600 out of Linux and the fonts are horrible too (and I *have* to keep Win installed because I use sw on it that's not avail on Lin (familiar story eh?) ).
It's quite something to build a 45 billion dollar company out of free software (which of course came from people working at "real" jobs), *then block Firefox*, and *THEN* sell to MICROSOFT!!
