I don't believe the ads emanate from this site, so the site admins may not be able to do anything about it. My take on this is that even though this is a Linux site, there are many people here who use multiple operating systems so it doesn't hurt to have an MS add now and then, it maybe of benefit to someone. If you are a zealot and don't like anything to do with MS, then use the adblocker.
The ads are, largely, outside of Jeremy's control. They are fed in from outside LQ. But let's turn it on it's head - if Microsoft want to pay Jeremy to run LQ, why wouldn't we let them?
I'm sure I saw Jeremy state publicly that he turned down Microsoft advertising in the past and as a matter of policy LQ was not going to show Microsoft ads. I just can't find that post now.
Lest I be misunderstood in the above post as being opposed to or supportive of any advertising policy at LQ, let me state that it is merely an observation, nothing else.
I fully understand that the site admin and owner has every right to choose which ads to show and which ads not to show.
As Jeremy tries to keep Microsoft ads from displaying on this site to keep you "strange" characters from flipping out just cause you see one ad from them, he can't stop them all as some might slip thru the cracks.
There are two things I suggest in this case:
1. Ignore and move on cause well, its only an ad.
2. Contribute to LQ and you can turn off ads all together.
You know, ads help pay the bills, last time I checked everything on this site is free so its not like a big revenue money maker.. I think for the first 4 years Jeremy was paying all the bills out of his own pocket.. so show a little appreciation and gratitude this site doesn't have annoying popup and flash ads all over the freakin place.. cause I've seen much worse.
Therefore I was right in thinking that Jeremy was against Microsoft advertising in this site in the first place which I vaguely remember in some past thread.
Thanks for clearing that up trickykid.
Hopefully users will take note of this and understand that sometimes third-party sites with Microsoft product support may sometimes slip through and be misconstrued as "Microsoft Advertising".
Anyway, I've never really understood why users have an issue against a website displaying any advertising that they choose to, provided of course that it's all within the limits of decency.

Exactly, if Microsoft wants to put pointless and waste their money on ads on a Linux Community site that they'll probably benefit nothing from by placing those ads, I say click on them so the money is paid to keep sites like this going on and on...

Precisely. Let me also add that while I understand that the administrator of any site has the prerogative to display whatever ads he/she likes on their sites, I do appreciate the advertising policy at LQ and admire the administrators' principled stand on the issue not to allow a company that has engaged in a campaign of disinformation against Linux to advertise in a site whose whole existence is to promote the use of Linux and help people with issues regarding Linux.

Just to clarify my position. It's not that I am against Microsoft ads per se. Journalistic integrity would dictate that we allow anyone to advertise here. Unfortunately, Microsoft has a bad habit of advertising *incorrect* and damaging information about Linux (ie. "Get the Facts" as an example). I will absolutely never run those ads at LQ - in fact I have turned them down on multiple occasions. Some money is just not worth it and I cannot in good faith accept that money. I'm not sure where you saw this Microsoft ad, but if it was for visual studio it was probably a Google ad and those are based on page content. If the page was a programming page and an ad for VS came up, I don't see a problem with that. Remember, what we are all after is fair competition. Breaking from that because the competition may be Microsoft is a bit hypocritical IMHO.
That must have been a google ad. Google ads are dynamically generated by content, so the site owner cannot predict which ad will show up in which topic.
Why are you all so flustered about it? Just learn to live with it or become a contributing member to turn off ads altogether.
