Glad I found this forum and already learn somethings as a guest.
My 5 year old Dell Inspirion is starting to die. Have had Dell laptops for the last 12+ years. Not interested in Windows 10 "lack of privacy". So it's either Apple or Linux.
My use is a "office suite" need to share documents and spreadsheets with Windows Office users, programming using Eclipse Java and PHP, and web browsing while at home and on the road with my motorcycle and horse. Still looking for a "highway routing" application to download routes to Garmin or seeing if BaseCamp will run in a Windows Emulator in Linux.
Don't know enough about the different distros which would fit best.
Hardware wise considering Dell but concerned about the reviews about there XPS developer edition and the Linux support as getting started with XPX seems to be problematic. Reading about ZaReason and System76. Read good reviews on ZaReason but it seems their behind in display technology. Looks like it is close to my current Inspirion but not like the current XPS or MacBooks.
Look forward to read your thoughts and exploring the forum
I install and run Linux on most everything except my ChromeBook.

If I get lucky and things pan out. I'll be picking up a broke IBM Thinkpad T520 or broke IBM Thinkpad Edge for under 50 bucks. But I am handy at fixing other peoples problems.
