Just sayin' "Hi"

New person here, looking to read enough to be able to ask intelligible questions. Yes, that ignorant; DOS 2.0 was the last OS I was actually comfortable with. Thanks for the Forum and the chance to learn something new.

Hi, welcome to Linux Questions!

I've never used DOS, but as I understand, it was largely a text-based OS, so you might find the Linux shell an interesting and refreshing change from the GUI. Not that you can't have fun in a GUI, but text is so much more efficient... and possibly more fun.

Welcome aboard!

Thank you!

Yes, it was text-based and simple, but ancient (like me).

I think learning something about the Linux shell will be much like re-reading a new issue of Hot Rod magazine - lots of new stuff, but based in an old, comfortable paradigm.

But truthfully my motivation is to get away from the mainstream and learn something new and usable.

Hello and welcome to the forum

Having a DOS like or CLI only Linux distribution is possible, take a look at the page here.

Regards...

Actually, the Linux shell is founded upon the basis of Unix and System V, and thus very old too. Just a part of computing which you may or may not have been involved with prior. Believe me, I think you'll find MANY people here who remember, and loved DOS, and some of them still manage to use it! Stop with the "old", there are very active octogenarians on this board. In fact, many of the regulars are retired people who either worked with computers, or got into them, and Linux as a hobby or for other reasons, like dumping Windows.

Welcome to the forums!

Thank you!! ...and, I like it here already!

My reasons are to learn something new (to me), and to dump Windows.

And once I've learned enough to be able to contribute, I'll be delighted to do that!
