Sayin' "Hello"
Greetings and Felicitations gentle-folk,
I am Garth Bowen and a new Linux - Debian - gNewSense user. In my adventures thus far I've come to realize I've chosen either: a fairly new or, a fairly esoteric Linux flavour. Well it installed relatively painless-ly and hit the deck running. So I can't complain.
I am a long time DOS/Windows user (back to DOS 1.something) but I have, like many grown disillusioned with Windows. Also, being an uneducated swine but a geek at heart, The curiosity about Linux was eating at me.
So, I still run Windows 7, x64, 8GB mem, 1/2TB drive on my dual-core desktop, with four monitors and several printers and USB drives.
A friend gifted me with an older, low-end Compaq dual-core, x32 or 64 (not sure, conflicting data), 2MB mem and a 60GB HD. Aaaaaand soooo I thought, "heeeeere's Linux. The installation went well, as described and now I'm leisurley exploring it's workings and using it as my On-Line PC shortly.
My immediate objectives were/are: get the Compaq cleaned up & checked out and running then get gNewSense installed and tweaked and on-line. That's done by this weekend. I will send my next post from the Linux machine then.
Long term, I will stay with Windows until I've gotten used to Linux a bit and gain confidence with it, determine if gNewSense is my flavour or another is better for my needs and I've located sufficient Linux based applications to replace those that I use in Windows.
Additionally, as I both like and need to use multiple monitors, I can realistically use more than four, at times; the concept of a "monitor server" on a personal network appeals to my Nerd/Geek gene - OK! I just want to play.
Thus far I've found that gNewSense, on the Compaq machine is a huge speed improvement of Windows in: loading, Internet and file handling. It's all bonus so far.
Anyway, I realize I have a runway ahead of me, experimentation to do and fun to have. I will be pestering you good folk with questions and I'll try to keep you informed if anyone's interested - perhaps a Blog???
Good to be aboard, Garth
