Smile Good day all

Good day all. I'm relatively new to this forum. Used Linux off and on since early 90's (depending on needs at the time) although I haven't used it since about 5 years ago. A lot has seemed to have changed over those years and I'm trying to get back into the game ha ha So I consider myself a newbie but with enough knowledge to be dangerous to myself lol

Anyhow I got tired of the Microsoft game. I had purchased - yes I did say that - XP home edition for my system, and it was doing my needs at the time. Issues happend, a motherboard died, things had to be reinstalled, and what do you know my valid product key seemed to no longer be valid after about the 3rd reinstall. I called microsoft and they give me the third degree about how many computers I had it on. Asking me who else I copied for. I was a bit shocked that I would be treated this way after paying around $225 canadian for the product. After about 45 minutes of answering their grueling questions I finnaly got my new product key.

Recently I've had to do a reinstall of windows - got hit by a virus that ate my partition table and superceded my antivirus software. I go to install my Windows disk, only to find out that there are scratches on it now (not sure why maybe cause the cat got to it), and no longer reads. Blah. Okay "Borrowed" a version from a friend, use MY product key - luckly it works. All is good, except now after having my ordeal, I am fairly put off by Microsoft in general. Time to go back to Linux - my trustee - FREE friend.

Had a few issues getting my nic to work with Fedora and Gentoo. Turned out to be nothing more than a feature disabled in my bios after fighting for weeks on end. Believe it or not, it was the feature that allowed me to turn on the computer from my keyboard. I had it disabled cause it was - to me - a useless feature. I turned it back on, my nic was working in linux fine lol

Next step. Installed Fedora core 6 x64_86. Everything run beautifully. Came across a problem. I use Yahoo a lot for conferencing with family, friends, and co-workers, as well as others who are into amateur video editing, splicing, etc. It's cheaper than using the phone, faster than post mail, and real time and webcams work okie dokie (although not as good as in msn) Okay, so I remember from years back I had installed a program called Gyach pY! Voice. It was more than fuctional, had all the features I loved, and was really good with the webcams. Had a few crashes but not many. I figured, great, lets install that again only to find out it hasn't been updated in quite some time.

Hmmm okay, next thing, research, come across a sub-project from the comunity of GyachE to make an extension or revision of the project called GyachI. I was very intrigued, and the screen shots looked really clean and well done. Okay time to install... Okay no RPM packages for Fedora, lets install source.. Failed. Ummm okay not fun lol

Blasted and installed Sabayon 3.3 x64_86 (based on lots of people at work reconmending it) and it looks awesome. Beryl looks top notch and its fast as a speed demon on my system. Very impressive. Clean and functional. Takes a bit to get used to Portage, but finnaly figured it out with Kuroo. Was greated to a package of Gyach (not GyachI) but it wont install on my system cause it apparently isn't tested. Bummer!

Okay, lets go back and try the source code of Gyachi! Wow, it got past where it did in Fedora! I get through the ./configure option! It tells me to use make! I'm happy overwhelmed and rapidly type make while my 6th pot of coffee brews, and..... looks like its working.... DARN! Failed. Argh Make fails and I can't make heads or tails over the error. Blah. Out of frustration I download the debian and ubuntu packages but of course they dont install ha ha Just had to try! You know how it is - frustrated you'll try just about anything even if you know it wont work.

And this is where I am stuck today lol

I have Sabayon linux on my system, it looks nice and all does ALMOST what I need, except I cant get something like a yahoo messenger with webcam to work properly on my system. I might have to bite the bullet and install Debian, but right now that isn't x64_86. I'm going to go through the portage tree to see if there are any applications that I could use for my video editing and converting processes. I make dvd's with menus out of the video files I have.

I was going to post this else where in the forum but it said I had to make an intro, so here I am lol
