Ndiswrapper just doesn't work

I've been trying to get D-Link wireless network thingy to work all evening. I'm a newbie so it took me a few hours to even find out what ndiswrapper is but now that I know, it doesn't work. I've installed the .4 version that came with the distro with rmpdrake (or something like that) and I've checked that it should be quite enough for the hardware.

The problem is that I'm unable to follow the instructions that lead to the proceedings of getting the device to work. I give any kind of command I wish and all I get is:

bash: ndiswrapper: command not found

I think this is because the entire world has decided to turn agains me personally. Anybody know how to fix this? And remember, I'm a newbie.

You probably haven't specified the path to ndiswrapper. Try doing the command like this:

sbin\ndiswrapper

Or you need to be su'ed (super user I think) like this:

su -

I'm too much of a newbie to know how to make it work without doing one of the two above, but there are ways.

Hope that helps.

I am a super user and the first line mentioned results:

bash: sbin/ndiswrapper: No such file or directory

And, it is correct. No such file exists. Even though I've installed it. Twice.

If you tried the .4 version I highly recommend you download the new source file from the ndiswrapper site. There are directions in there on how to install source files but you can also ask here. .4 is really old and I think you'll have a lot less trouble with the newest version.
